Buildings

University of Montana Research Labs Building
University of Montana

Missoula, Montana

This project included construction of a new labs building within the campus of the University of Montana. The proposed structure was slab-on-grade construction with interior column footings and a basement area. Our investigation was performed using the Orion drill rig. Our evaluation considered groundwater levels, bearing capacity, and settlement criteria. Recommendations included foundation type, allowable bearing values, and water drainage system provisions.

Berman Project
Bozeman, Montana

The proposed project was a multi-level, primarily glass office structure surrounded by a constructed pond. Subsurface materials consisted on soft plastic silts. Design challenges included low tolerable settlement due to the amount of glass, frost-susceptible soils, soft subgrade conditions, and water infiltration consideration from the adjacent pond. Orion recommended and designed cast-in-place concrete piers for foundation elements. The final report presented pier size and depth requirements based on bearing capacity (skin friction and end bearing), lateral capacity, and uplift restraint requirements. Submittals included geomembrane details to control water infiltration from the pond, and installation recommendations and specifications for the concrete piers.
