Earthen Dams
Forest Rose Tailings
Dam
Jens, Montana
The project included stability evaluation of three mine
tailing impoundment dams located on Dunkleberg Creek. Stability was a
concern due to environmental contamination related to recent slumping.
Performed subsurface investigation, monitoring well installation, and
geologic mapping. Existing failure surfaces and active seepage zones
were used to back-calculate soil parameters to be used in stability
analysis. Performed computerized slope stability analysis. Presented
probable risk-based failure mechanisms and magnitudes. Determined the
dams are currently unstable, and provided conceptual remedial
recommendations including horizontal drains and a spillway channel.
Mullan Road Sewer
Project
Missoula, Montana
Project included construction of a sewer main through an
existing earthen dam. The primary concern related to destabilization
of the dam due to piping of water through sewer bedding materials.
Performed subsurface investigation using Orion drill rig. Provided
design and details to prevent piping along the sewer from the
up-gradient pond. Details included a series of flowable fill/grout
blocks to cut-off water migration. Submittals included grout block
locations, trenching and shoring, constructed slopes, and material
specifications.
